Hunting for the Prize of Serenity

The Author shares Reflections on Her Path to Serenity in New book.

With all the multitasking, channel surfing and Internet browsing going on in these hectic times, it is difficult to focus on the simple pleasure of calm moments.

In her new book Mushroom Marathon, Running Toward the Prize of Serenity,

Lynn Moriarty Parman, 67, shares her experiences in the search for a serene life.

A collection of brief, yet powerful, reflections, Mushroom Marathon delves into the everyday objects, situations and even creatures that most inspire Parman to stop, enjoy a serene moment and remember what makes life worth living. Above all else, Parman writes, "finding time to contemplate one's relationship with God is a sure way to find serenity."

Parman bases her reflections on the peacefulness she finds in country living. Her childhood days on a farm and her current marriage to a farmer provide her with the "holy place" she shares with readers in her book. One aspect of country life she has become familiar with is the patience required in the hunt for mushrooms, which she compares to many humans' lifelong hunt for serenity. If life is like a marathon, Parman's book is like a cool splash of water on the way to the finish line.

Parman grew up on a farm in north central Iowa. She has been a homemaker, bookkeeper, craft instructor and a truck stop manager. She enjoys being a non-traditional student and earned her diploma as a Graphic Artist in 2004. She was published in 2001-A Poetic Odyssey, and was the 1994 Missouri winner in the Great-Midwestern Think-Off, sponsored by New York Mills Regional Cultural Center in Minnesota. In September 2003 she was published in Stars and Stripes as a guest columnist, documenting her story of a trip to Korea with the Veterans of the Korean War who were commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Signing of the Armistice.
